Ferreira da Silva, S.A. is currently one of the biggest companies in the fruit distribution sector of the Iberian Peninsula. With a turnover of around 40.000.000€, this position reflects the realization of a well-thought-out strategy designed to reach one specific goal - the leadership in the sector in which the company operates.

    Our History

 

Ferreira da Silva, S.A. was established on the 19th of February, 1988, with its headquarters in Vale da Murta, A-dos-Cunhados. The choice of the location was due to its strategic position – close to producers and other fruit and vegetable companies, leaders of their respective markets, as well as due to a considerable number of retailers operating in the Torres Vedras municipality and the western region of Portugal.

In 1993 the existing shareholders acquired the total capital of the company. The business expanded significantly, mainly due to the investment in human resources - people with deep knowledge of the local and external markets, as well as the investment into facilities, equipment and fleet.

In 2002 Ferreira da Silva, Ltd was reorganised into Ferreira da Silva, S.A. The share capital was increased up to 2.500.000€. In 2013 the company increased its share capital again, up to 3.000.000€.

    Our Partnerships

 

The need to guarantee its customers a complete fruit assortment all year round, regardless of the season, forced Ferreira da Silva to look for suppliers who could guarantee a stock of fruit during the whole year.

New partnerships were established and some of the Group‘s companies were created. These companies operate not only at the markets of their origin but also supply Ferreira da Silva and export autonomously to some markets.

The partnerships with Ferreira da Silva allowed some companies to expand their activities, switching in some cases from mono producers to producers of new products and exploring new markets. Ferreira da Silva has its own production with shareholders and partners in some countries of South America.

    Quality

 

To meet the requirements imposed by its management, clients and supplies, Ferreira da Silva as currently implemented the HACCP system (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point). The company also implemented the GSFS – Global Standard for Food Safety (former BRC – British Retail Consortium) in its food safety system.

We understand that the development of an institutional system based on the criteria of Quality and Food Safety will lead to further improvements in the company´s management. This means greater efficiency and higher standards, with positive effects on the quality of services provided by the company.
